Is Velvet Goldmine a good movie? And is it appropriate for a 14 year old?

So here's the deal, my cousin and I are best friends, and she's coming to spend the night. We're both huge fans of David Bowie and anything glamrock, so we've decided to try this movie at our sleepover. HOWEVER, I've heard some people say they didn't like it, so I'm kind of worried we'll be disappointed. So I'd like to hear some more opinions on if it's good or not. Also, my fourteen year old sister is going to be around, which I think is pretty much old enough to handle most movies, I mean, unless there is a ton of violence or it's a o flick. But just to make sure, is it okay for her to watch? Thanks!
