English riding?

what is the correct hand position for riding english, specifically jumping? is it the same as western? because when I go to rodeos, the barrel racers sometimes have a habit of doing "puppy dog wrists". but is that correct when jumping? I am exercising horses at a hunter/jumper barn and most of the riders jumping do that. and they are jumping pretty high and seriously. but my trainer said its not correct so.... I'm confused.
