Honestly can good essays save me if i have a low sat math score?

i really want to apply to cu boulder and part of the application are two essays and im a pretty good writer so im not too worried about that.BUT my sat math score is really low(makes up only like 8 percent of entering freshmen). could essays overshadow that? oh btw, i want to major in communication or journalism not math or engineering lol
