WHAT THE HELL IS HE DOING?

Baby Girl he isn't trying to do anything to you. He must feel bad for treating you badly before. I say GOOD lol he should. Due to peer pressure even if he did like you he would never show it (in public). As far as you being nice of course you should you are a lady and should not sink to is level. However that said if he is horribly rude and you think of something at the time to cut him down to size be brave bold and throw it back at him. Chances are he will like you more then, as his friends talk to him this way and he cares so much what they think, what you think matters to him also (which is why he feels bad for being an ***) however he will become even more rude. So be prepared. Honestly he probably isn't worth your time. And in ten years you are going to see things very differently and wonder how you could have ever liked him anyways. If this does upset you to a point you can't control the pain you should ignore him all together. Literally as if he does not exist. In the mean time look around at other guys that deserve your time and attn.
